While staying at our B&B in Saint-Jeures, Haute-Loire, Martine and I did a 5.5 mile walk yesterday. These barns were in a small settlement in the middle of hills and vales. All of these farms are quite small.
The buildings seem to have the same plan as barns in Vermont: upstairs for the hay, and a ramp to drive the wagon up there. Ground level would have been where the animals were sheltered. Many of these old barns have been turned into homes (though not this one). In the top picture, you can see where the old wide door at ground level has been blocked in and a window put in.
More scenes along the walk:
Approaching the end of the loop, we stopped at the Croix de Couvet.
I sat on a wonderful stone bench to rest and look at it.
Approaching Saint-Jeures again at the end of the loop. You can see the village in the distance.
